Best Movies List of 2019

Best Movie List of 2019

This movie list is in no particular ranking order and is set up by release date. While the year isn’t quite over, there are many worthwhile films to enjoy. Some common threads emerged from my list that I probably could have foreseen. Disney live-action remakes, superhero flicks and various sequels populate much of this roster but I don’t see it as a detriment. All of these movies were agreeable on some level so I believe there is something for everyone.

Ultimately, I believe the strongest movies below are “Us” or “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” however they might not be of interest to all. I understand that not every film goer will be wrapped up in cinematography or the tone so I tried to include a blend of blockbusters and various genre entries. Enjoy the list and let me know what you think in the comments!

1. Glass – Release date – January 18th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 1. Glass - Release date - January 18th 2019Universal Pictures

A sequel to M. Night Shyamalan’s “Unbreakable” and “Split” that was critically panned but fans of this universe will find pleasant. Overall it feels like a somber deconstructionist take on the current superhero wave. Bruce Willis plays an aged vigilante that uses his powers to fight James McAvoy’s disturbed and animalistic villain while Samuel L. Jackson portrays the mastermind.

2. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part – Release date – February 8th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 2. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part - Release date - February 8th 2019Warner Bros. Pictures

Although the sequel is not quite as funny as the original it will be entertaining to children and adults alike. The music and jokes are repeatable and catchy. Chris Patt, Tiffany Haddish, Will Arnett and Elizabeth Banks do a great job as lego people embarking on a bizarre cosmic journey. I won’t bother to get into the ‘plot’ too much but it happily involves space aliens and lego blocks.

3. Alita: Battle Angel – Release Date – February 14th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 3. Alita: Battle Angel - Release Date - February 14th 2019 20th Century Fox

Robert Rodriguez’s adaptation of an anime is about a reborn cyborg warrior who has a case of amnesia. Featuring fun and campy performances by Christoph Waltz, Rosa Salazar, Jennifer Connelly and Mahershala Ali. James Cameron is a producer on the film and it has the sweeping sci-fi world we’ve come to expect from him. While at times it feels abit hollow it’s a fine genre movie.

4. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – Release date – February 22nd 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 4. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World - Release date - February 22nd 2019Universal Pictures

This kid’s movie franchise is still full of life and satisfying. Toothless the dragon and his rider Hiccup discovers more “Night Fury” breeds and travels to a secret kingdom. Jay Baruchel, Cate Blanchett and America Ferrera are stand-outs among the cast of characters. While it might not even be the best animated movie of the year it is worth a watch for enthusiasts of this universe.

5. Captain Marvel – Release date – March 8th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 5. Captain Marvel - Release date - March 8th 2019Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Carol Danvers played by Bri Larson is one of the strongest Marvel characters and is caught in a war between two alien races. Though the movie is typical superhero-origin fare, it is a blast to watch partially because it takes place in the 1990s. Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and a cat named Goose steal the show at times. Overall fans of Marvel comics or science fiction will stay for a watch.

6. Us – Release date – March 22nd 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 6. Us - Release date - March 22nd 2019Universal Pictures

Jordan Peele’s newest horror movie stars Lupita Nyong’o, Elizabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker. It is a family beach vacation turned awry by murderous doppelgangers. Not unlike a Twilight Zone episode, the movie isn’t necessarily scary but more atmospheric and surreal. I would recommend it even to people who aren’t usually into frightening movies. The acting is strong and the ridiculous premise isn’t always played completely straight so at times there is humor.

7. Shazam – Release date – April 5th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 7. Shazam - Release date - April 5th 2019Warner Bros. Pictures

Zachary Levi and Mark Strong feature as the hero and villain in the origin of a magical DC comics character. Billy Batson is a teenage orphan who is granted a mystical ‘word of power’ and can turn into an adult superhero at will. The movie is kind of like Big and has a lot of humor intermingled with darker elements. While the flick has many one-liners, the tone comes down at times to deal with evil demons and the perils of foster care.

8. Avengers: Endgame – Release date – April 26th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 8. Avengers: Endgame - Release date - April 26th 2019Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Taking place after the events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) the remaining Avengers assemble to reverse the damage caused by Josh Brolin’s giant purple villain, Thanos. The Russo Brothers deliver an entertaining but long epic featuring great performances by Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans among many others. While the movie has fantastic effects and action I should note it won’t make much sense or be too interesting unless you have watched the rest of the Marvel movies.

9. Pokémon Detective Pikachu – Release date – May 10th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 9. Pokémon Detective Pikachu - Release date - May 10th 2019Warner Bros. Pictures

The world of Pokemon is one where people do battle with various wild creatures. A boy played by Justice Smith encounters a talking Pikachu voiced by Ryan Reynolds. The two uncover a conspiracy that could change their world forever. The result is surprisingly good. The movie is funny, action packed and cute. Fans and strangers of the Pokemon world will enjoy this one.

Best Movie List of 2019 - 10. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum - Release date - May 17th 2019Lionsgate

Assassin John Wick played by Keanu Reeves returns for another round of outwitting and murdering other stylish combat experts. While the plot and dialogue aren’t too deep. The action and gunplay is superb and any fan of the action genre will be pleased. Halle Berry and Laurence Fishburne do an excellent job in this movie as well.

11. Aladdin – Release date – May 24th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 11. Aladdin - Release date - May 24th 2019Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The trend of remaking animated Disney classics continues. Will Smith takes over for Robin Williams as the Genie and director Guy Ritchie does his best to recreate the quasi arabic and asian ancient world without relying on stereotypes. Not too much has changed as the movie is still about a young street kid encountering a magic lamp that has the power to grant wishes.

12. Godzilla: King of the Monsters – Release date – May 31st 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 12. Godzilla: King of the Monsters - Release date - May 31st 2019Warner Bros. Pictures

Millie Bobby Brown and Ken Watanabe are excellent it this course-corrected sequel to the western Godzilla franchise. The last movie was derided as being too slow and human focused. Purists clamored to see more of the giant lizard. Godzilla now fights classic enemies like Mothra, Rodan and the three-headed dragon King Ghidorah. Giving what the audience wanted works well for this monster movie.

13. Rocketman – Release date – May 31st 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 13. Rocketman - Release date - May 31st 2019Paramount Pictures

A biographical and musical fantasy about Elton John’s early years played well by Taron Egerton. While not following history completely, the film was gratifying and the covers of Elton John’s hits were stronger than expected. Egerton sang his versions of the superstar’s classics. Fans of his music and history will be pleased with this film’s depiction.

14. Toy Story 4 – Release date – June 21st 2019

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen return to the familiar world of Toy Story yet again for a heartstring-pulling summer event. When the new toy ‘Forky’ joins Woody and friends a road trip ensues that causes the scale of the world to grow even larger. With equal parts humor and sadness, Toy Story 4 delivers. This is an excellent sequel that kids and adults will enjoy.

15. Spider-Man: Far from Home – Release date – July 2nd 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 15. Spider-Man: Far from Home - Release date - July 2nd 2019Sony Pictures Releasing

Tom Holland plays Peter Parker following the events of Avengers: Endgame from earlier in the year. Spiderman encounters Mysterio played by Jake Gylenhaal and the two mysterious ‘elementals.’ The supporting cast is strong and includes Samuel L. Jackson and Marisa Tomei. While the film is great fun it’s biggest weakness is relying on an Avengers movie it ultimately doesn’t have much to do with.

16. The Lion King – Release date – July 19th

Best Movie List of 2019 - 16. The Lion King - Release date - July 19thWalt Disney Studios

Yet another remake of an animated classic, the Lion King features a strong cast and visual splendor. Donald Glover, Beyonce and Seth Rogan are great standouts. Expectedly, the movie is Hamlet with cats once again. After the murder of the king Mufasa a young lion prince flees the kingdom to learn about responsibility and power.

17. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – Release date – July 26th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 17. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Release date - July 26th 2019Sony Pictures Releasing

Quentin Taratino’s epic starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt is in my opinion, an Oscar contender. A has-been television actor and his stunt double friend struggle to find success in a changing Hollywood. A subplot concerning the fated Sharon Tate is compelling yet treated in an unexpected way. This is a must watch for any fan of Tarantino or 1960’s Hollywood history.

18. Good Boys – Release date – August 14th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 18. Good Boys - Release date - August 14th 2019Universal Pictures

Seth Rogen produces a hilarious film in his style and vein. Three middle school boys cut school and go on an adventure while trying to make it home safely. Jacob Trembley, Keith L. Williams and Brady Noon do a fantastic job as the leads. Any fan of Seth Rogen’s brand of comedy will enjoy this one. Admittedly there are some similarities to the movie Superbad, however there are worse things for a flick to be guilty of.

19. It: Chapter Two – Release date – September 6th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 19. It: Chapter Two - Release date - September 6th 2019Warner Bros. Pictures

Stephen King’s remake sequel to his evil clown hit is a wonderful conclusion. A few decades after the first film the monster returns to terrorize a rural town “The Losers” club returns home to deal with the supernatural menace. Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, James McAvoy play grown-up versions of the original kids quite effectively. At times the movie is funny, cheesy and creepy yet it never feels stale or predictable as many horror movies do.

20. Ad Astra – Release date – September 20th 2019

Best Movie List of 2019 - 20. Ad Astra - Release date - September 20th 201920th Century Fox

An astronaut embarks on a dangerous mission to the edge of our solar system to uncover the mystery surrounding his missing father. Brad Pitt, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones and Ruth Negga give amazing performances. The movie is character instead of action driven. At times it apes things like 2001 or Interstellar effectively. While it occasionally drags, fans of science fiction will likely enjoy.
